Nevada Casino Operator Faces Legal Woes Over Security Breach

Nevada Casino

According to a report from 8 News Now in Las Vegas, a class action lawsuit has been filed against the company that operates the casino at Rising Star Sports Ranch Resort in Mesquite and The Brook in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

A Californian who claims that a security breach at the casino caused ransomware to attack his computer filed the lawsuit. The lawsuit says that the company didn’t give the affected people enough timely notice.

In November 2022, the Rancho Mesquite Casino was the target of a cyberattack. During the attack, a hacker got access to sensitive information about more than 200,000 customers and employees, such as their full names and social security numbers.

However, the casino did not inform its customers about the breach until December, when it sent notices to its customers.

In a letter that was enclosed in the court filing and sent to those whose personal data was exposed over the course of the several days of the hacker attack, the company explained that there was “a cybersecurity incident” on November 9 that affected Eureka, during which parts of the casino company’s systems “were encrypted by an unauthorized actor.”

This information was included in a letter that was also sent to those whose personal data was exposed over the course of several days of the hacker attack. A provider of protection for cloud data, Eureka Security is headquartered in Israel.

“Upon discovering the incident, they immediately took steps to secure its systems, began an investigation, and a cybersecurity firm was engaged to assist,” wrote the casino company to the affected parties, telling them that “although the investigation is ongoing, to identified certain data that the unauthorized actor accessed during the incident.”

The casino company also told the people who were affected that “the investigation is still going on, but some of the data that was accessed by the unauthorized actor during the incident has been found.”

They started looking through the data and discovered that it contained some of your information,” the letter came to a conclusion, pointing out that the data that was compromised by the hacking attack included names and social security numbers, among other personal information.

Customers who were affected were also given a dedicated phone line and a full year of credit monitoring services from the company.

The members of the class are asking a jury to give them money because the company didn’t encrypt their sensitive information and to tell the operator to improve its cybersecurity. The lawsuit accuses the casino operator of negligence, breach of contract, and other counts. It also asks the jury to order the operator to strengthen its cybersecurity defenses.

According to the documents filed in the class action lawsuit, plaintiffs and class members now face a significant risk of out-of-pocket fraud losses, such as loans opened in their names, medical services billed in their names, tax return fraud, utility bills opened in their names, credit card fraud, and other forms of identity theft.

The operator of the casino was given multiple opportunities to comment on the situation but chose not to do so when contacted by the reporting media.
