The figures are included in the second annual report issued by the two organizations, which continue to monitor and map the business.

One-third of online gamblers reported experiencing a problem in the preceding year. This indicates that 1.7% of the population has a gambling problem and has called the state’s helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER, for assistance.

These calls have given institutions an excellent sense of who is vulnerable and exposed to gambling, with the bulk of those reporting problems with gambling being married, in their mid-to late-30s, with an annual income of more than $50,000, and primarily residing in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The majority of these callers have employed the survey states. In order to compile the report, the institutions consulted 1,100 Pennsylvanians. This information will be utilized to gain a deeper understanding of how problem gambling affects individuals and how Commonwealth regulators can better assist vulnerable consumer groups.

Dr. Latika Davis-Jones, secretary of Drug & Alcohol Programs, stated that the department intended to guarantee that persons who suffer with gambling have access to the necessary assistance to overcome the problem.

In the Future, Data Will Help Address the Issue

Dr. Glenn Sterner, an assistant professor of criminal justice at Penn State, supported the survey, stating that the data would be useful as the state seeks to better address the rise of online gambling in Pennsylvania and how services can better assist those who are currently struggling with gambling.

The survey also aims to illustrate the detrimental effects of excessive gambling on people’s lives, saying that concealing the habit could damage family relationships and cause them to lie to their loved ones. Penn State and the Control Board issued a joint statement stating that gambling can have detrimental effects on a person’s financial, physical, and emotional health.
